Mirpur Test: Bangladesh's Batting Tested as Seales Strikes Early
The first Test between Bangladesh and West Indies began at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat on the first morning, a decision that appeared to be based on home conditions. Mirpur usually offers slow, low surfaces, and spin is expected to become more influential as the match progresses. However, West Indies pace bowler Jayden Seales struck early with the new ball, dismissing opener Tanzid Hasan for just 7 runs off 23 deliveries.
Tanzid's dismissal was technically revealing. Seales bowled in the fifth-stump channel, drawing the batter into a check drive away from his body. Tanzid showed minimal foot movement, the ball found the edge, and Greaves took the catch at second slip. It was a classic Test new-ball dismissal. The delivery and field placement suggested West Indies had a clear plan: probe outside off stump, tempt the drive, and use the slip cordon. Greaves's safe catch at second slip also indicated that West Indies had a reliable close catcher in that position.
Still, one wicket does not establish control. The match is in its earliest phase, and the Shadman Islam-Mominul Haque partnership is now the immediate test for Bangladesh. If the pair survives the early period, Bangladesh can recover from the loss of Tanzid. If West Indies strikes again quickly, the pressure will grow on a middle order already weakened by the absence of the injured Mushfiqur Rahim. Towhid Hridoy has come into the side as a replacement, but Bangladesh lose a great deal of middle-order experience without Mushfiqur.
Bangladesh's selection of three spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam, signals a deliberate home-condition strategy. The team expects the pitch to help spin later in the match. Early seam movement, however, was always a possibility on the first morning, and Seales's success confirmed that the new ball could be decisive. The pitch report was not provided, so this remains an inference rather than a confirmed assessment. Weather, humidity, dew and DLS information were also unavailable, meaning environmental factors cannot be properly assessed.
For West Indies, the challenge is to build on the early breakthrough. Seales executed a disciplined new-ball plan, but his spell length, pace, movement and overall figures are not known. One wicket is a positive start but not enough to judge his full performance. The same applies to Bangladesh's batting: Tanzid's 23-ball stay for 7 runs suggests early difficulty, but the sample is too small for a form or career judgment. His dismissal points to a possible vulnerability outside off stump, but one innings cannot confirm a long-term weakness.
Bangladesh's decision to bat first places responsibility on the top order. Losing Tanzid early exposes the middle order and increases the importance of the Shadman-Mominul partnership. The home side will also rely on its spin trio later in the match. West Indies, meanwhile, will look to sustain pressure with the seamers and use the new-ball advantage as long as possible. The match remains open. The first session belonged to West Indies, but the contest is far from decided.
