Pathum Nissanka Ruled Out of Test Series, Sri Lanka's Opening Woes Deepen as Lahiru Udara Steps In
Sri Lanka have suffered a major blow ahead of their two-match Test series against Pakistan. Opening batsman Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out of the Test series due to a hamstring injury. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officially announced that Nissanka failed a fitness test, following which he was removed from the Test squad. Lahiru Udara has been included in the Test team in his place. Udara is currently part of Sri Lanka's squad in the ongoing ODI tri-nation series in Pakistan and has been playing as Nissanka's stand-in. This change is a serious concern for Sri Lanka as the Test series is scheduled between November 9 and 21, leaving the team with very little preparation time.
Nissanka's injury story is quite long. In August, he suffered a wrist injury, which kept him out of the home Test series against India. Then in September, he suffered a hamstring injury, which ruled him out of the T20I series against Pakistan and the ODI tri-nation series. Now the same hamstring injury is keeping him out of the Test series as well. This is his second major injury in about three months, which is a worrying sign for a young opening batsman. Sri Lanka Cricket had initially included him in the Test squad on a "conditional" basis, but he had to be removed after failing the fitness test. This shows that the board's medical team had set a strict fitness benchmark and the player did not meet it. This is correct from a process standpoint, but it also suggests that the September hamstring injury was more serious than publicly communicated.
In Nissanka's absence, Sri Lanka's Test opening pair could be weakened. In Test cricket, an opener's job is not just to score runs but to survive the new ball and give the team a solid start. Pakistan's surfaces have been batting-friendly in recent years, but Pakistan's fast bowlers are adept at taking early wickets with the new ball. Therefore, losing an experienced opener like Nissanka is a big loss for Sri Lanka. However, it is also important to note that Nissanka's Test average or other metrics are not available, so an accurate assessment of his contribution is difficult. But the recurrence of his injury is the biggest concern.
Lahiru Udara has been included in the team. He has experience of 5 Tests and 7 T20 internationals. His best red-ball innings is 188, which signals his potential. However, he has scored only 313 runs in 9 innings, which is a small sample. It is not clear whether these figures are Test-only or all red-ball cricket, and whether all 9 innings ended in dismissals. Therefore, any estimate of his average can only be directional. But his 188-run innings shows that he can occupy the crease for long periods, which is a necessary trait for a Test opener. Udara's selection is logical in the sense that he is already with the team in Pakistan and playing in the ODI series, which will help him adapt to the conditions. This is a lower-risk option than flying in a new player from outside.
Looking at the composition of Sri Lanka's Test team, it appears bowling-centric. The team has a frontline spinner like Prabath Jayasuriya, and the pace attack can be handled by Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga. The captaincy is in the hands of Kusal Mendis, who is an experienced player. In batting, there are players like Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis, but Nissanka's absence has exposed the fragility of the top order. The squad has 15 players, with a mix of experience and youth. Young players like Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha are also included. Therefore, Sri Lanka will have to think about their batting depth.
Ahead of the Test series against Pakistan, Sri Lanka had chased a target of over 400 against England in the ODI tri-nation series, which was described as "history-making." But it is important to remember that this was an ODI match and Test cricket conditions are completely different. Chasing 400+ in an ODI can be the result of a batting-friendly surface and aggressive batting, but in Tests, long innings, patience and bowling depth matter. Therefore, this win should not be taken as a sign for the Test series. Sri Lanka had lost their first match of the tri-nation series to Pakistan, which reflects their inconsistent performance.
Nissanka's injury has raised a big question for Sri Lanka's selectors: should the team play with an extra batsman or maintain depth in bowling? Since Pakistan's surfaces are considered batting-friendly, Sri Lanka's bowling, especially spin, could be decisive. Prabath Jayasuriya and other spinners will have to play a key role. But if the batting is weak, the pressure will increase on the bowlers. Therefore, the team management will have to strike a balance.
From a risk perspective, the biggest risk is the recurrence of Nissanka's injury. Two separate injuries in the same quarter (wrist in August, hamstring in September) are serious signs for a young opening batsman. This raises questions about his workload and fitness management. Sri Lanka Cricket should consider this seriously. The second risk is Udara's lack of experience. Five Tests is not enough experience in Test cricket, and Pakistan's fast bowlers could test him. The third risk is Pakistan's home advantage. Pakistan are strong on their own surfaces, and winning there has always been challenging for Sri Lanka.
From a governance perspective, Sri Lanka Cricket's process appears correct. They included Nissanka conditionally in the squad and removed him after a fitness test. This is a standard procedure. There is no major controversy. However, it may raise the question: if the player's injury was serious, why was he included in the first place? But this is a normal player-management process.
From the public's perspective, the media is portraying Nissanka as a "star," but his Test numbers are not available. Therefore, this "star" framing is based on reputation, not data. Describing the win against England as "history-making" is an overstatement of a single ODI win, which could wrongly inflate expectations for the Test series. The most underrated aspect is Udara's potential. His 188-run innings shows he can do well in Tests, but he is being seen merely as a replacement.
Overall, this is a low-commercial-value news item but important from a sporting perspective. Sri Lanka will have to rebuild their Test opening pair without Nissanka, and they have only 12 days to do so. Pakistan's surfaces are batting-friendly, but results in Tests could be hard to come by. Sri Lanka's bowling is their strength, and the team will have to rely on it. This is a big opportunity for Udara, and if he performs well, it could benefit Sri Lanka in the future. But for now, Nissanka's injury and his growing injury problems are a serious warning for Sri Lanka cricket.
